U.S. military aid to Israel is a barrier to peace. This aid sustains Israel’s occupation of Palestinian land and buys weapons used against Palestinian civilians. Has U.S. military aid to Israel over the past six decades advanced the prospects for peace? Quite the opposite: tens of billions of our tax dollars in military aid has not and will not bring peace because the conflict requires a political solution—not arming one side. America’s reputation and precious resources should be utilized to promote a positive outcome for both Israelis and Palestinians.

A “blank check” undercuts U.S. leverage with Israel. Our government has foolishly guaranteed that military aid will flow, year after year, even as Israel’s actions run counter to our stated policies and national interest. The U.S. government has pledged $30 billion in military aid to Israel over a 10-year period from 2009 to 2018. This means that no matter what the Obama or any other administration says about peace talks, settlement growth (shown here), or the suffocating siege of Gaza, Israel’s government has no incentive to change its policies.

Military Aid to Israel undermines our domestic priorities and the rule of law. In this time of economic crisis and financial uncertainty for millions of Americans, our tax dollars are being diverted from critical domestic priorities to support counterproductive policies that fuel the conflict. To make matters worse, U.S. taxpayer dollars support Israeli policies that are in violation of international law and U.S. law, including the Arms Export Control Act, the Foreign Assistance Act, and the “Leahy Law.”

Military Aid to Israel harms U.S. interests. Because of its unconditional support of Israeli policies, the U.S. is seen around the world as facilitating the Israeli occupation. General Petraeus was quoted as telling the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff that “Israeli intransigence on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was jeopardizing U.S. standing in the region,” and Vice-President Biden warned Israeli leaders that Israeli insistence on building settlements in East Jerusalem “undermines the security of our troops … endangers us and endangers regional peace.”
